Melbourne Town!

That is what I have decided to call

the "My Small World" quilt.

I have had some fun this week personalising it...

with my own embroideries.

I find it easier with the little blocks

when lots of seams meet,

to iron them open.

I make the small pinwheels by

cutting two 2" squares of each colour

and drawing a diagonal line.

Stitch a scant 1/4" seam either side of the line,

cut apart and press open.

Trim each to 1.5" each

and construct the pinwheel!

To make the larger one I start with a 3" square...

I found this top triangular shape easier

to foundation paper piece...

Draw a 2" square and mark the halfway point at the top

I followed Molly Flanders applique method for my

clamshells...

To make this block, which uses the 'V' template,

I cut two 4" squares, cut them on the diagonal,

sew opposite colours together and

trim the final block to 4.5"

More pattern corrections can be found here

Happy sewing!

I've been pressing some of the seams open on the smaller blocks too, it has made it less bulky. I love how you are personalising your quilt with things that are meaningful to you.

I tend to press seams open often, and it is a good tip for small blocks. I love how your quilt is coming together.

You are working so fast on this one - must mean it is a lot of fun! Thanks for all the tips too - one day when I make my own I will back to re-read all of those :-)

Oh my! You are so amazing! I love your tips and tricks for Small World, and hope to get going on mine soon enough. Brilliant idea to personalize the quilt with embroideries of your own design--another great idea!

Fantastic tips. I will try the paper piecing method having just done the same shape in part one using templates. I'm going to use some of your other tips too right now!
Your Melbourne is looking fantastic. Mine is going to be more like Paris even though I've never even been there.

This is just so beautiful. I keep changing my mind on things so consequently I haven't even started, other than looking at lots of fabric and trying to make decisions. Thanks for the construction hints as well. I know I'm going to need all the help I can get. I have an idea for the sky but not sure--I'll email you about it and get your opinion.

Wow!! So is that it finished, or is there still more to go? (Sorry, I don't have the pattern). I love your name choice and the little details. The cloud and umbrella are just perfect for Melbourne (although shouldn't you represent all four seasons, in one day?) You know I can't resist a little dig, which is made even funnier by the fact that I was born there! Well done, and I'm sure plenty of people are appreciating your tips and tricks along the way.

LOVE IT!
(But a cheeky part of me is looking for a coffee-drinking Melbourne bearded hipster in the details. :) )

I keep coming back to this post to check your methods. Thank you for the tips. I'm going to tackle the tiny pinwheels today I hope. I've been paper piecing the 60 degree triangles and they are going well. I love this quilt!

I'm loving all the photos and info you're posting about the process for this amazing project! It's hard to not just jump in and get at this project but I just can't. Can't. Can't. Can't. Not yet. And so I'm watching yours with great interest, excitement and admiration! Every now and then I find my mind wandering to ways in that I might personalize my project, too, to make it better represent my part of the world in Saskatchewan, Canada. I must hurry and get my other pressing projects finished so I can start this. We're actually talking about doing it as a project with our Modern Quilt Guild. That would be fun!
