Scrap busting.....again!

We all have scraps, no matter how hard we try to

control them!

I recently sorted out my small box of scraps that sits on

my cutting table, slowly multiplying since the beginning

of the year.

After trimming them into pieces with straight edges,

 I started mindlessly piecing blocks!

The blocks finish at 9"

Then I found LAST year's scraps!

So more sorting was required.

I now have a rather full tub of neatly trimmed scraps of

all sizes!

 Enough for many more blocks!

I imagine this will be a long-term project,

in between piecing, quilting and sewing other things!

Happy sewing!

I really, really like what you're doing here, Susan! I think you sort of glossed-over the most difficult part of making these blocks, and that is pressing and cutting. My bins are SO jumbled-up, that every piece has to be pressed first. And then, the trimming takes forever. I don't know about you, but I have mostly pieces that are really odd shapes, with angles and curves, that take more decision-making as to how to efficiently cut them. Of course, it's most gratifying to reach the stage where all the bits are squared and ready to sew. But gosh, it takes a long time to get there! I admire you for tackling this as you are. I'm doing it too, but in an off-hand way, piecing pairs of scraps as leaders and enders. At the rate I'm going it will be years until I see a quilt from my efforts!

I normally turn those blocks into potholders - both for gifts and our home - but lately I've been enlarging them to placemat size. Every other Sunday we have Dinner at Mom's (our adult son invites his friends over) and these are perfect for Sundays. I even used a panel someone gave me to make a couple of fishing placemats. You should have seen one of the guy's faces when he sat down at the pink placemat but saw I had a fishing placemat. So fun. Keep up the scrap busting!

Hello Suz,
there is this porrige pot in a fairy tale, which re fills always over night. Scapp boxes are the same!
Sometimes I have the feeling, I am not working on anything else than this scapp boxes.
But I like scappy quilts!
Your blocks look nice.
Happy sewing , XXX Doris :o)

I do this with my scraps, make it large enough for a changing pad. I use them as gifts for my new grandma friends, included with wipes.

I am never that industrious. I just keep stuffing scraps into the bins and I doubt I'll ever use them all in my lifetime! But the same goes for my fabric stash too.

They are looking beautiful.

Love how you pieced these blocks so randomly. Any tips to share on how you accomplish this.

Loving what you did with your scraps and can't wait to see what you do with those wonderful blocks1

I love it I need to do the same thing, when you are cutting a project what size leftover piece do you consider a scrap?

Good idea & we do seem to accumulate them. I once hosted a Mile a Minute scrap project at a group I once belonged to & donated said quilts to the Salvation Army winter appeal. It was good fun and maybe I should do a few too for charity. Thanks for sharing, take care & staysafe.

I really like these, Suz. It’s nice to use up those bits and pieces.

Such a fun making "crumb" blocks. So many possibilities … Join them all together? Cut them up - say into HSTs, and add a solid - and then join them all together? Looking forward to seeing how things progress.

Looking very organised and efficient.
These blocks are a wonderful show of colour.
And there are always scraps around!

Why is it that everyone else's scraps always look better than your own? The old grass is greener syndrome I think. These are looking awesome and makes me think I should do the same. Maybe. One day :0)

I've been sewing random floral scraps into four inch blocks. Looking at yours, I'm wishing I had sorted them by color. Maybe I should use those for something else and start over.

You don't have to square them. Just sew together crazy like and trim your block to the size you want. Save those trimmed scraps for another block!

Fun to see these take shape. I loved reading through all the comments of those who wrote earlier (one of the advantages of being a late writer); I can identify with the writer who said she just stuff and stuffs and her bins keep getting more full! I'd better get industrious, like you are!
