Half Rectangle Triangles

I have wanted to make a quilt from

half rectangle triangles for a long time now!

This book is from an exhibition back in 2016.

And I saw this modern quilt on both Instagram and

Anja's blog recently.

Not my work...I'm using this for inspiration!

It is a new pattern from 3rd Story Workshop,

available here

So before diving in,

I did a little research to find the best way to

make them...

because they can be tricky little blocks....

bias seams and all!

I remembered 'pinning' this diagram,
which sadly leads nowhere any longer.

But I did find two excellent videos for making two at a time.

One is by Jacquelynne Steves here,

Making two at a time

and the other by Southern Charm quilts here.

Freezer Paper of finished size

I combined all that I learned to make these.

Then trimmed back to have 1/4" seams

Trimming....

Apparently, that little edge is important to the final

pointiness of the block!

So now I know they are not too tricky and give a

crisp result,

One layout option
and another!

with some room for improvement.

I can, however, see a new quilt in the making!

But first I have this to finish....

Happy sewing!

PS I’ve had some recent comments asking questions but I have no way of contacting you, because you are a no-reply blogger.  Please make contact again so I can help.

I could look at your 'halo' quilt for ages, so very very pretty! I love it! Must admit, the quilt on the cover of your book is one that's appealed to me for a long time, love the peach & white {with occasional blue & coral} combo.

I love your Halo quilt. All those precious blue-ish fabrics!!

I struggle with the half rectangles. Making them is OK but joining them up seems to cause problems. Obviously I don't make them consistent enough.

Your Halo quilt is just gorgeous, such beautiful blues. It has a lovely, soft vintage appeal.

Love love the Halo quilt and all those pretty blues. My local modern guild started the year with half rectangle triangles as part of our year long block of the month skill builder. I haven't done it yet but thought I'd pass on the link to our tutorial for what it's worth. https://bouldermqg.com/2020/03/01/half-rectangle-triangle-tutorial/

Your Halo quilt is amazing, I love it!
Regarding the HRTs I prefer to use the HRT BlocLoc ruler. Everything becomes so easy with these rulers. Although it's not a bargain. But worth every Cent...

That's an interesting pattern but may be too modern looking for me, unless it was made with repro fabrics or something. Lovely anyway.

I have also been distracted by HRTs. There are some lovely designs out there. I will have a look at the links you have provided. Interesting comment from Sandra re the BlocLoc ruler.
And I am going to join the chorus in praise of your blue halo quilt. It is gorgeous.

Your Halo is coming along beautifully. Is this the final size?

Your HRTs look great. Kudos for finding a way to make two at a time.

Thanks for sharing the links. The HRTs are just a bit tricky but looks like you have it down now!

Wow--you have really gotten the hang of those HRTs. I'm totally impressed with how you nailed those black and white triangles, too! I remember that Debbie had us make HRTs for one of her blocks, way back long ago for MCM Bee. I still have some of her scraps kicking around. I look forward to seeing all of your blocks from this!

I’ve had a HRT quilt on my radar for a couple of years now, I even bought the BlocLoc HRT rulers but that is as far as I’ve got. Maybe this year or next. I love looking at your Halo quilt, all the blues are very calming to me.
