flock together.
Yes, I have my AMH "Feathers" quilt top complete!
I'll be honest,
I struggled for a time...
with rectangles of various sizes,
in both width and length,
I couldn't get my head around their placement-
the angles
and where the edges of quilt should be...
I decided I needed something as
a reference point.
You can see the quilt underneath the Feather blocks... |
So I picked a quilt off the pile
to use as my design wall.
I then set about
placing, cutting and re-stitching
sections and setting triangles,
until it was together!
Nothing too mathematical, just trial and error really!
The top now measures roughly 60" square.
Do you think it needs borders?
There are a lot of bias edges to contend with!
But I have no more background solid left-
neither Kona Ash nor the original background fabric!
( I thought I might even run
( I thought I might even run
out of fabric altogether at one stage!)
I could always order more,
including the backing I now need!
In the meantime I am waiting for
quilting inspiration to strike!
Thank you ladies of the Mid-Century Modern Bee...
I love my quilt!
Happy sewing!

I love your feather quilt! The setting you chose is brilliant , having them on angle adds so much movement.
It's gorgeous! I don't think you need a border because the feathers are floating inside the edge anyway. I'll leave the quilting ideas to you, got no advice there! I love how its turned out and the setting of the blocks. Well done!
It is amazing! Cannot wait to see it finished!!
I love it!
It looks wonderful! I love how you've set them, and I don't think they need a border either. Despite the headaches they look brilliant!
I love your feather top. You have actually inspired me to order my templates and have a go :O)
You've made an amazing quilt with these blocks. I'm so pleased to be a part of it.
No border needed (IMHO) and orange for the binding. Its gorgeous. x
oh wow! This is looking terrific! I'm a fan of the no-border look!
So beautiful! Love the angled placement. And I'm in agreement with the No Border Needed opinion voiced by others.
Wow, it looks beautiful. I don't think it needs a border either.
I think you did a fantastic job of putting it together! Go you! It looks great with no border. Very modern. A border may take away from the feathers
Utterly fabulous!! Love the setting and I'd leave off the border too, its gorgeous as it is!
If it's big enough you don't need a border! It has to be feathers surely in the quilting!??
I love these feathers on the diagonal. Great idea! I agree with the rest, no borders. Maybe you can do a small stay stitch close to the edge to help hold the shape and prevent stretching out the bias? I am not sure it will work but that's all I got. :)
This turned out beautifully, Susan, and I wouldn't add or change a thing! Definitely no borders. It's great to have the slightly different background colors, as you'll see when it's finished, how much depth it adds to the quilt. It looks perfect to me. I hope quilting inspiration strikes you hard! That's the best way to know how to move ahead. I'm seeing some quilting on the diagonal, but then part of the quilting running perpendicular to that, to add interest.
that's a fabulous block to do in a bee and they have come together just beautifully.... great job...

Adding to the chorus of 'brilliant', 'no borders required'. Both the blocks and the setting are fabulous. Jill (Sydney)
This is wonderful :-) I don't think it needs borders - just a nice bright binding.
Sounds very tricky to make but it does look fantastic.
Yay for getting it done! My thoughts on a border are: yes, a teal or orange border, it might help with binding if its a solid piece of fabric rather than binding multiple pieces.
And you should love it! It is fantastic,! Do you want to hand quilt or machine quilt? Either way it is great! I love the feathers shooting off like arrows!
oh Suz.....I love it! I am so glad that you decided to go with the diagonal, it's perfect! I am a real border kind of gal, so of course, I say yes to 1 or 2 borders.
I would love it too if it were mine.
Gorgeous! No, I vote no binding, too. And either a dark teal binding or go scrappy with all the feather colours. Either way, it's going to look fantastic!
It looks great! I love the feathers on an angle!
I can't offer any advice on borders or quilting I'm afraid, but it looks amazing!
Looks great! No borders needed. I think the angled layout really adds a lot to the feather block. Kind of like arrows flying through the air. Maybe the quilting can add to the movement. PS Sorry my block was probably one of the odd sized ones.
This looks gorgeous! I really love the vibrant colours of the feathers against the background, and the diagonal setting works so well. I reckon borders could work, or adding a border of the background colour so that the feathers are really floating in a sea of negative space. They would also bring it up to a slightly more "useful" size (if you wanted to use it on your bed, for example). Can't wait to see what you come up with!
Suz, you have a stunning quilt here and I'm so happy to have a couple of feathers floating around on it! The modern block will look more modern w/o borders, in my opinion. The idea to stay stitch the outside is a good one if you don't have enough background to add an inch of grey background around the outside. If it were mine, I would probably do straight line quilting either on the vertical or horizontal of the quilt. I love the texture that adds!
It looks amazing! I do like your approach to problem solving.
Good luck with the next stages.
You could stay stitch around the edges to control the bias stretch and leave it as it is. I think it is looking great.
Love the feathers on the diagonal!
It looks great, I don't think it needs a border, the feathers are gorgeous! :-)
It looks amazing suz! :) great job!
It has worked out very well - you must very pleased! A beautiful on- of-a-kind quilt.
This is so amazing--and I love that you have it done!
Like many others, I vote no borders, and if you want the binding to disappear, use a faced binding, which will be folded to the back.
You are A-MAY-ZING!!
Just perfect Susan!
