Well, "Tartan" is what MrPnP called it,
when he saw my latest quilt top together!
As this is made from Densye Schmidt's
"Shelburne Falls" range of fabric,
that's the name that's stuck!
I chose the pattern from here...
There is just one partial seam in each block....
right there in the centre!
But it came together fairly painlessly!

I didn't need to use "Herman" too many times! |
The solid I chose is Kona "Chinese Red"....
a nice change from white or grey,
and appropriate for a southern hemisphere winter.
Though I'm not sure the Chinese made tartan fabric?
Perhaps someone else has a better name for me?
Happy sewing!
SUZ
That is very cunning the way that block is put together. Maybe you could call the red "Highland Red", it does look like tartan or a sort of celtic chain.
ReplyDeleteI see what you mean! This looks fantastic. Love the red background - it's an excellent tartan colour.
ReplyDeleteInteresting pattern and I love the colours you have used. So Herman lives at your place, I have Susie that lives at my place...I think they come from the same extended family. LOL. My SIL gave me Susie and she would have been bought in Melbourne.
ReplyDeleteIts a great name, it really does look like the weave of a tartan. The red is such a great shade and was an inspired choice to go with the Shelbourne Falls.
ReplyDeleteYou're a quilting pro with that fancy shmancy 1/2 seam in the middle. I'm well impressed :)
ReplyDeleteWell having the correct heritage I say very much a tartan!! *g* It's a brilliant block and makes a stunning (complicated!) quilt. Nicely done!!
ReplyDeleteI love the name and the colors!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat was the block/ pattern called in the book?
Love your quilt! And the background fabric makes it even more stunning. Great job!
ReplyDeleteLooks amazing Suz, beautiful, red is a favorite of mine.
ReplyDeleteI do see a bit of tartan too, and ladders, and trellises, and the edgy holey thingummies on the sides of photo negatives. Can we think of a fun Bay City Rollers song title to use as a quilt name?
ReplyDeleteLove that Chinese red!
Susan, this is wonderful! I love the pattern all those links create (I see the tartan similarity and think the background helps that). Such a vivacious quilt! Will definitely brighten things up for you over the winter months. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteWow! I love how that turned out! What a great idea to use red! It is stunning! Aren't you smart?
ReplyDeleteLove this one :) fun and intriguing at the same time.
ReplyDeleteVery cool! Love the colour combo.
ReplyDeleteThat red was a great choice. Stunning quilt!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great quilt! I'm always too conservative to use anything but a neutral for background!
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful! I'm in love with that red - perfect as you say for a winter quilt.

ReplyDeleteIt's stunning! With the lacquerware red I think the pattern looks less tartan and more like something you might find on a Chinese room divider. So how about Chinese Screen?:-)
ReplyDeleteIt looks great. I can see why it looks like tartan and quite like the name.
ReplyDeleteOh that red! It makes for a very delicious quilt no matter what season. So dramatic. I love it!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful for sure! Great pattern.
ReplyDeleteThis looks terrific and I love that red!
ReplyDeleteTartan is a good name. I tries a Y seam the other day and had to scrap the project
ReplyDeleteI love this Suz and tartan is a great name.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool quilt!
ReplyDeleteLove the red background, and I think you have hit on a perfect name. Perfect for a cold Melbourne winter.
ReplyDeleteOh I love this!! Especially the RED!
ReplyDeleteAre there supposed to be Links on your Finishes for 2014 so we can see the quilts? There is a list on your page, but they don't link to anything.
I love it! The red is gorgeous
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty quilt, Susan! Gosh you're fast... or else you've been sewing this for a while and just didn't share it. Red is a good choice for something completely different, and smashing! To me it all looks like chain... a necklace or a bunch of ankle bracelets.
ReplyDeleteLove that Chinese Red background color! Beautiful quilt Susan!
ReplyDeleteI love the red, so striking!
ReplyDeleteI love this pattern. What is the finished width of the strip pieces? I have just the red & , of course, a ton of scraps.
ReplyDeleteLovely finish and the red is a wonderful choice with the other fabrics you have used
ReplyDeleteLove, love the quilt. Are you able to give approx. dimensions?
ReplyDeleteValerie, you are a no-reply commenter, so I cannot email you. I do not remember the dimensions of the pieces and no longer own the book. Sorry!
DeleteVery nice! My husband's family comes from Scotland. Perfect quilt! Good job! 🙂
