Sew Seasonal Blog Hop!

Welcome to my day of the Sew Seasonal Blog Hop!

You might see something that will get your Christmas

sewing off to a good start!

Sew Seasonal Blog Hop

I gave you a little sneak peek of what I was making a

few days ago...

It is a paper pieced block...

I trace my block onto drawing paper that is

reasonably see-through!

And sew through the paper...

It does tear away very easily at the end!

I also cut my fabrics to the rough size required before

I start!

Now you can tell what I made, can't you?

I was having so much fun, I made....

not one, but two more!.....

In three different sizes!

I made these into a pillowcase!

Do you want to know why?

When I was growing up in the sixties, we didn't have

Christmas stockings....

A Santa Sack!

We hung a pillowcase from the end of our beds and

that's where Father Christmas left our presents!

It was known as a Santa Sack!

Does that seem weird?

Greedy?

Did anyone else do this?

I'd love to know your thoughts!

Kelsey over @ KelseySews is also 'sewing seasonally'

today!

  1. What a cute pillow case! I do love stockings, and that little present could fit on a stocking too.

  2. Oh WOW - totally loving your Pillowcase. I too had a pillowcase as a Santa sack growing up in the 70's and I have passed this onto my two children as well.

  3. Love it!! Such a great idea for a Santa Sack! The pressies look so sweet!

We always did the pillowcase thing too - I only heard it called a Santa Sack in recent years.

  6. Very cute! I think pillow cases were quite common in the past... Stockings have always seemed a strange idea to me!

  7. Love that pillow case! We always hung pillowcases at the end of our bed when I was growing up :)

  8. I love it! We did not hang pillow cases...just stockings on the mantel the night before Christmas. And actually our stockings were just dad's socks! But I love the idea of a pillow case hung at the end of the bed. Thanks for the tute on paper piecing...your packages are precious!

  9. This is very cute. My family also used pillowcases instead of stockings (in the 90's). Stockings are way too small! Might make a few of these for this Christmas - doesn't look like they'd take too long to put together.

  11. Very cute block. We had stockings growing up, and I still give my adult children their stockings. Crazy I know...

  12. Very cute, indeed! I could never tell my brother-in-law about Santa Sacks, though… He's at best 6yrsold when it comes to anything Christmas. Mostly, that's charming. But his inner 6yrold would insist on having a stocking and a sack. :-)

  13. Such a cute pattern. I was looking for something like this! Santa sack...that's cool! Sure could get more stuff in there!

  14. Maybe it's an Aussie thing because we used pillowcases too. We'd place a pillow case at the end of the bed and in the morning it would be full of presents from Santa. Your paper pieced present are really fun!!

  15. I had one of those in the 70s as well! (Santa sack). They eventually migrated from the bed to under the tree (probably because we started waking up when Santa snuck in) and then the pillowslips were phased out. A bit sad really.
Great little block for Christmas! Wow, I can't believe we're sewing for Christmas already.

  16. I've never heard of a Santa sack before but I think a row of presents would make a pretty table runner!

  28. I like the pillowcase, lovely idea. We had a pillowcase as a santa sack when we were little, but they didn't look this cute. Ours were decorated with pictures drawn with crayons :)
